On the Course

Mandatory Gear - we have a list of mandatory gear you need to carry with you on the race. This is for your safety so we won't make exceptions.

We recommend you carry a PLB or Garmin inReach. If you don’t have one now could be the time to buy one or borrow from a friend.

Maps vs GPS - we do require you to carry map and compass. We do not allow cellphones and GPS in leiu of this. Happy for you to carry them as well. We do want photos of the race, so phones do have some uses on the race!

There is a map link you can download and print on the Mandatory Gear page

Food & water - you need to be self-sufficient for the duration of the race. We will have water stations at Alpha and Kime Huts, but you will need to carry water with you on the course. Please, if you use gels etc, be conscious not to let the packets drop on the track.

Marshals - there are 2 marshal stations. Alpha Hut and Kime Hut. They will need to see your race number on your front at both check-ins so we can track your progress. Wellington LandSAR are also on the course to assist with safety. They will also be at the huts and around Atkins.

Competitor safety & support - this is an authentic mountain race so we do expect runners to support fellow competitors if needed. Call on the assistance of others if required and head to the closest marshal station or send a message through for SAR to come to you.

Alpha cut-off time - 12.30pm is the cut-off time for your arrival at Alpha Hut. If you haven't arrived by then, you will be turned around at Alpha to make your way back to Kaitoke start.

Registration for the Southern Crossing

Registration is at Aaron's Place on Marchant Rd. It will be sign-posted from the SH2 turnoff to Kiwi Ranch.

Parking is available in the paddock. Please don't come into the house gate as we need to keep this clear for the start shuttle run.

You can leave your car here during the day and overnight if required.

Registration and gear check will occur here. Note: Portaloos are located here, not at the start line.

We recommend you arrive about 45 to 30mins before your race start so you can get registered in time.

The actual race start is 1km up the road. We have a shuttle running to the start. Note there is limited temporary parking on the roadside at the start. It is your responsibility to get yourself to the start line for your start time.

A pre-race briefing will occur about 5 mins before your start time.

Spare gear bag - we will have a drop off point at registration where you can leave your clean dry gear and we'll take it to the road end at Otaki.

Start time - Start times have been allocated as requested when you signed up. If you need to change the start time, please let us know as early as possible. We prefer not to change them on the day.

Turnaround/withdrawal - There are limited options for withdrawing from the race. If you have to withdraw from the race before you reach Alpha Hut, please ensure you advise the Tail End Charlie team and also check back in at Aaron's place and advise race communications. If you need to turn around after Alpha, please advise the Tail End Charlie team and Alpha marshals. We don't want to send out a search team for you!
